ENGLISH REVIEW: Aimee Carter - The Goddess Test

The Goddess TestThe Goddess Test by Aimee Carter

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I'm sorry but this book was not what I'd expected and I don't mean it in a good way. The beginning was very promising, that few Henry's lines in prologue brought a mystery to the story and I couldn't wait for the action and romance to happen. And so I waited and waited and waited....

This should have been a wonderful book. It should have been about Greek mythology being transformed into the modern world, it should have been about Greek gods it should have been everything the book description had promised and more. Yeah, the thing is, it wasn't and it makes me so angry, because it's not like there are so many YA books based on the old antique myths and I was really looking forward to read this one.

I found impossible to relate to Kate. It was like we experienced things through her eyes but at the same time we weren't allowed to see what was really happening inside her head. Everything felt so distnant. I couldn't break the invisible barrier which separated me from Kate and so after a while I just stop caring about her altogether. And I think that's the worst possible thing, to stop caring about the heroine, because after that, there is just no more hope for the book.

What irritated me the most were the names. Henry? Diana? Really? The one and only thing, which could have saved the Goddess Test from the total fiasco of not having anything to do with Greek mythology was taken from us when Ms. Carter decided to change the names of gods to some ordinary English names. I know she did somehow explain it at the end but that doesn’t change the fact that as far as I'm concerned, by calling Hades Henry, she put the last (or was it the first?) nail in the coffin.

I'm not going to start with the chemistry between Kate and Henry (which was nonexistent), because I already feel bad by publishing this negative review. I know Aimee is a very young debut author and I wish her lots of success in the future because it looks like people generally love The Goddess Test and I'm the one who just didn't get it.

Thank you, Harlequin Teen and Netgalley for giving me an opportunity to read and review this book. Despite my opinion, it's much appreciated.

Nuž, uvidím či si to prečítam. Dosť si ma odradila teraz. xD

  4. Vieš čo, nemám nič proti zmodernizovaným menám, ani tu by mi to nebolo vadilo, keby mi aspoň zvyšok pripadal trochu mytologický. A môžeš mi dať potom vedieť, sama som zvedavá :)
